If the camera can do it or not, is the point. You should NEVER set any digital camera to shoot several reasons only black and white for. First, the black and white looks terrible when done behind closed doors. All it does is waste all the color data and leave a flat, lifeless, low contrast picture. Second, you can do a better job A LOT of black and white conversion with editing software on your computer. There many software programs designed specifically to do this, and give the beautiful black and white results. But while only an average of good photo editing program can be used to give a better color to white conversion black and what the camera can do. Third. I would like $ 10 for everyone who has come to mourn in this forum about how they can change your photo in black and white color again. If you shoot with the camera in black and white, that's all you have. You can not make the color later. When shooting in color, can be converted to black and white on the computer, make it a SAVE AS to convert black and white to save as a different file. Biggest complaint seems to be that Canon should have included a 1 or 2 GB SD card. It comes with a 32MB memory card. With cards being so cheap that have not made a difference significantly in cost and probably would have made this a true "5" rating.
