I would say "not much" too, but that's only without knowing some of the other specifications. If it's a 17mm f/3.5 and an 18mm f/1.8, there's a lot of difference because of the aperture.

But if all other specifications are equal, then no, there's really not a whole lot of difference.

One of my first award winning photographs was a photo with a waterfall in the background and a stream leading from its base right into the foreground. I was standing in the middle of the stream at a fairly low angle, but what made this photo unique was that I had also managed to capture several stars reflecting off the water. I admit it; it was pure luck, but with so many people impressed by those little stars . . . I started looking for ways to be able to do that whenever I wanted. That was when I first started exploring the world of photo filters.

Photo filters are NOT going to change a bad photo to a good one, BUT . . . they may change a good photo into a great one. In other words; filters are like the frosting on the cake, if the cake itself tastes bad, it doesn’t matter how sweet the frosting is. For the sake of this photo article we are going to assume you know how to make a good cake (take a good photo), and now you are ready to go to the next level.

Star Filters - these are available in 4 point, 6 point, or 8 point variety. These photo filters add glamour to nature or highly reflective surfaces (like someone playing a trumpet).

Polarizer’s - this type of photo filter is often thought of for enhancing clouds in the sky, but they also give you more control with reflections on water or glass. They also help with extreme photo lighting situations like snow or sand.

Close-Up Filter Set – not everybody can afford an extra $300 to $400 for a macro lens, this set of photo filters is well worth the investment. This gives you the edge to be able to take advantage of, and photograph the unexpected; whether it is a butterfly on a flower or dew on the morning grass.

Split Field Filter – A Split Field Filter allows you to go beyond the limits of traditional depth of field in photography. Half of the lens is basically a close up filter, half is regular glass. Now you can take an extreme close up photo of a flower at the edge of a vast canyon and still have BOTH sections of your photo look crystal clear.

Split Color Filter – This filter comes in several combinations. Similar to the split field filter, part of the filter is just regular glass, BUT the other half is colored. If half the filter is deep orange for example, you can take a photo of any mountain range and make it look like it was taken at sunset.

Spot Filter – The idea behind a spot filter is that a small portion of your photo will appear sharp (usually a spot in the middle) and the rest of the photo looks soft and dreamy. Often used in Wedding pictures or individual portraits.

Soft Focus Filter – As the name implies this photo filter gives the entire image a soft focus or dreamy effect. Use this VERY sparingly or people will think you can’t focus. Besides photo filters there are some other small items that you should tuck into your camera bag to help you improve photographic opportunities. The cost of these photo gadgets are relatively small but can give you big time (professional looking) results.

Double Sided Poster Board – For many years I carried a 10 inch x 12 inch poster board that was black on one side and white on the other. This can be used to make a small subject stand out from the back ground. A small tree frog on grass is much harder to see than one against a black background. This can also be used for controlling light like a small photo reflector.

Spray Bottle – having a small spray bottle of water means now you can take a “flowers with morning dew” photo, even if it’s the middle of the afternoon. You can also make an athlete sweat whenever you want them to; or you can wet down wild hair that is blowing in the wind for a better outdoor portrait.

The last fairly cheap item for big results is a Tripod or a Monopod. Tripods don’t have to be built so a man can sit on it to be of good quality. And if you are worried about space as you are taking your wonderful photo trek into the wilderness consider a monopod. It offers stability as well as making a good walking stick.

All of these items are considered photo add-ons. None of them are required to make a great photo, but when the opportunity arises it’s good to know you have the right tools at your disposal. Of course there are hundred of other photo gadgets and gizmos that you can get, but I advise sticking with the basics. Far more important than anything you can add to the outside, is the vision you have on the inside. Learn the elements of design. Practice leading lines, balance, repetition, framing and the rule of thirds . . . these are the ingredients of a great photo. All the rest is just frosting on the cake.

When buying a camera lens, there are factors that you need to consider to assure of producing best quality shots even in low-lighting conditions.

The Glass

• Focal Length - It is the actual distance in-between the focal lane of the lens and the rear element, measured in millimeters (mm). When there is a shorter focal length, the field of view becomes wider, providing more scenes for your camera to capture. When you increase the focal length, the actual field of view becomes narrower.

• Aperture - It is one of the mechanisms that control the actual "amount of light" passing through the lens towards the image sensors. It is also referred as "f-stops," like f/2/8. The smaller the number, the larger the opening. This means more light enters the camera. Since it begins to collect additional light, a type of lens that allows you to open to a wider aperture also enables you to have a faster shutter speed. Such feature is essential in low lighting conditions to obtain sharp images, especially through a handheld camera.

• Image Stabilization - Slower shutter speed can result to blurry photos when cameras are handheld. Image stabilization counteracts the shaking, allowing one to shoot certain handheld shots amidst low lighting conditions. Canon's term for this is IS (Image Stabilization). Nikon use the term VR (Vibration Reduction).

Zoom lenses included in a variety of DSLR kits offer focal lengths ranging from 18 to 35mm. Depending on the cropping capability of the camera, it can reach up to 55mm. This means that you can go from only a moderate "wide-angle" view towards a so-called "slight telephoto."

If you have plans of expanding your digital camera's features, here are some things you need to consider:

• Prime Lenses - These should possess a longer type of zoom lens or a lone focal length between 35mm up to 85mm. Prime lenses have a better glass on them.

If you get the "fixed-length lens", there is a tendency that you will be required to move around when getting your shot. Of course, over a certain time, this will already help you make better compositions.

Prime lenses also possess a wider type of maximum aperture, making it easier to get sharper shots, especially under low lightings.

• Zoom Lenses - For those wishing to get action photos, the best would be the "telephoto lens" which ranges from 100mm up to 300mm. This is due to the DSLRs crop factor. There is not much zooming needed. A good example would be Nikon D40 which has a 200mm type of telephoto lens that can turn into a 300mm one.

The Nikon D90 DX 12.3MP Digital SLR Camera is one of Nikon's entry-level Single-Lens-Reflex cameras. Nikon has always been known as the leader in the digital cameras, and the D90 doesn't spoil that impression. If I were to just go out and buy an camera without even comparing features, a Nikon would be the one I'd buy.

They've kept the weight and size of the unit small, so it's easy to hold. Many of these SLRs are enormous. However, it's not too light; a camera that's too light is hard to keep from shaking.

Here are some of the benefits and features of the Nikon D90 DX:

1. The way it's built is sturdy and secure; and it has a nice feel when you heft it. Every Nikon delivers outstanding quality images. You don't even have to worry about that, if you're buying a Nikon.

2. The lens which comes with it, called a 'Kit Lens' is OK; but you might wish to purchase a better lens in the future. It's sufficient for a beginner. I like a lens which goes all the way from 30mm - telephoto, and gives you good quality at the same time.

3. They always give you the option to edit the photos right inside the camera, which I never understood. Certainly you're going to waste precious battery time if you were to do that, and wouldn't it be far better to use Photoshop, later, to do such things? I can't imagine anybody actually using that feature no matter what the camera is.

4. The battery lasts longer than most of its competitors, which is a very good feature. If you have a card which holds 600 photographs, and a battery which can last three hours; there will be few situations that you would run out of either.

5. It has an enormous LCD monitor, allowing easy view of even the minutest detail. That way you don't need to zoom in to see the level of quality. Most LCD displays are much smaller than that

There are some annoyances with the Nikon D90 DX 12.3MP camera, as there are with any camera:

1. When you're shooting videos, there's no auto focus. I suppose that it has to take so many photos in such a short period of time that it can't also waste time moving the lens in-and-out. The frame rate is more important to worry about.

2. When you remove the kit lens, strange things sometimes appear on the menu or the camera will stop working and you'll have to remove the battery to have it reset itself. However, most people won't be removing the lens, anyway.

3. As is the case with some other SLR cameras, with the exception of the Olympus, the camera's Live View is basically unusable. They're throwing on that feature at the last moment, I think, trying to compete with the Olympus... which doesn't work. Much of what makes live View work is Proper attention to programming speed. The software has to be able to keep up with the incoming image, and that's not an easy thing to do. So, they leave out features in their attempt to get it displaying fast enough.

In conclusion, I would have to say that Nikons are always noted for their level of quality, and the Nikon D90 DX 12.3MP Digital SLR Camera doesn't disappoint.
