What would happen if I used a Canon XSI with the Canon 100mm f/2.8 macro Lens?

I am pretty new to photography but am obsessed with taking macro pictures. I am looking into buying the Canon 100mm f/2.8, but I heard that something is not compatible with the XSI, something to do with it not being a full frame camera, and I would not be able to get the full use out of the lens? Can anyone provide some light on this? Thanks

The Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM is fully compatible with your Canon EOS Digital Rebel XSi. The "photographers" or "salesmen" that are telling you otherwise know more than is useful and are passing along technically correct, but impractical information to an amateur.

The EF 2.8/100 was designed to be used with Canon's full frame cameras and preforms optimally when mounted on one. However, one of these full frame bodies (5D, 1Ds, and their newer replacements) costs more than the lens in question. The lens will work well with the XSi albeit with a very tolerable drop in sharpness at the lower and higher f/stops. Because of the crop factor of the APS-C sensor on the XSi, the lens will be equivalent to a 2.8/160.

It's always a good idea to think ahead when investing. Think of the extra performance as a perk for optionally upgrading to a full frame body rather than a necessity.

Photography Equipment - What's in my camera bag?

This is a question that I'm asked often and it's a hard one to answer. When I travel I tend to "travel light", often only carrying one body and 2 lenses plus assorted other paraphernalia. When I have the luxury of travvelling by car or boat I tend to carry more, closer to what I have listed below. So, here's my rant about what's in my bag. Any comments?

To start with, I use Nikon cameras. I'm often asked why I use Nikon rather than Canon and the answer goes back about thirty years when I first started doing photography seriously. A friend had a Canon F1 with a motor drive and I had a few simple Nikon F's, no meter, just the basic cameras. What struck me about the Canon was how heavy and bulky the package was. Now, this is nothing against Canon as the equivalent Nikon at the time was likely just as heavy and bulky. Being on a shoestring budget for many of my early years I acquired a large quantity of used Nikkor lenses and other miscellaneous camera system components.Years later Pentax came out with a fancy little professional camera, the Pentax LX. The lenses were good and sharp, everything was lighter than the equivalent Nikon equipment and I sold all of my beat up Nikon gear and temporarily switched to Pentax. While I thoroughly enjoyed using the Pentax equipment the set-up suffered from lack of development and the bodies had a tendency to have their shutters crack at inopportune moments. It was time to switch back to Nikon again.

With the digital age it was clear that Nikon or Canon would get my business. In most ways it was a no brainer for me, I had all these Nikkor lenses, why reinvest in a completely new system? That's why I'm still using Nikon. Is Nikon better than Canon? My guess is that any of the modern cameras can produce great images with a good photographer operating them. All these systems can also produce terrible results with an incompetent photographer operating them. As well, I have started using many third party lenses that can be purchased for many different systems. I guess it really comes down to personal preference.

So what's in my bag? I'll start with the weird and accessory items:

Toshiba notebook (only if required, a few days away from computers is healthy), I'll tell you what's on the computer at a later date

USB reader
2 USB cords (I either lose them or they are a little finicky)
250 gb hard drive
160 gb hard drive
Garbage bags (lots)
Band aids (these are useful for more than just patching up my body)
Lens cleaning fluid
Lens cleaning paper (in truth, I almost always use my shirt or other old clothing, underwear (clean) etc, I know….)
Permanent marker
BC Ferry schedule (may not be useful to many of you)
An old magazine or two (for the road, usually something other than photography like Air & Space or Vintage Motorsports)
Lightweight gloves
Super duper LED flashlight
Visa card, "can't leave home without it"
A few leaky pens and,
a pair of small scissors and a knife (that I have to remember to remove before boarding an airplane).

Upgraded from 50D to 5Dmkii

I was scared to spend the money but when i received the camera i was pretty sure i had made the right decision. The menu system is very similar to the 50D so i was able to start making custom settings instantly. The 'bulb' setting is a welcome feature compared to the 50 and as is the 3 custom settings instead of 2. Image quality is awesome along with the full frame sensor to bring out the best of my L series lenses. Take the time to sign on to the canon registration since you get extra perks as a 5D owner.

I'm blown away!!!

What can I say, the is one amazing camera. I bought this to replace my old body (20D). Full frame is the way to go, I can't say enough about this camera. The image quality is amazing, low light photography is better then expected. The added video is nice, while the live view is a welcomed change. I also purchased the battery grip with this unit plus a large (16gb) high speed card, you definitely need the larger memory card if you will be shooting in raw+jpg, like i do. Now I can take advantage of my "L" glass with this camera. Well worth the price! My clients will appreciate the end result. One last thing, if you are a extreme macro photographer, you will take advantage of the live view function, it helps when you reach for a shot especially with the Canon MP-E 65mm Lens, Canon MT-24EX Flash. Nikon Guy forced to go to Canon for resolution

I'm doing a large scale documentation project photographing objects on a copy stand. Was pretty sure I was going to use Nikon bodies as thats what I'm familiar with. I tested several bodies and it came down to a 5d MkII or a D3. I'vee never been a pixel peeper but it was clear that that the added resolution with the 5D made a big difference and it was too ignore. Also it comes with the software you need to tether the camera which is nice. My biggest complaint is the ergonomics, big and clunky. Luckily I don't have to handle too much, because I definitely think Nikons are better in this regard. Also Canon's RAW format is less proprietary than Nikon's which does make a big difference to me.

What is the best Canon telephoto and macro lens??

I purchased a Canon EOS Digital Rebel XSi and I want to go all out and buy ONE great lens. I want super mind-blowing macro and telephoto so I can get amazing photos of flowers and bugs and also things like the moon or other things that happen to be farther away. Is there such a lens?? If not, what would be the best macro and telephoto lens (separately)?

Sorry, can't do it all in one lens.

I would save my money & only get the 100mm f/2.8 that was mentioned earlier. It qualifies as telephoto & is superb for macro & portraiture work. I have the 70-200 f/2.8 as well, but I do not think it is appropriate for what you want to do. It's expensive & it sounds like you are looking for a "super telephoto" lens. You'd be sadly disappointed with its reach. Even a 100mm-300mm f/5.6 lens would give you more reach -- at a quarter of the price. No offense, but if the pictures don't look good -- it will most likely be due to your actions vs. the quality of the glass.

The glamour of the super telephoto is VERY COMMON & is usually short-lived. You'll quickly find that it is impractical most of the time, VERY heavy, & will REQUIRE being on a tripod under most conditions less than cloudless sun.

The only other compromise I can think of is to purchase the 180mm f/3.5L lens. A little more reach, but much more expensive & still a compromise on the super telephoto end.

If budget is not a problem, I'd still opt for the 100mm f/2.8 for the macro, & a 600mm f/4L IS lens ($7,000). If that's too steep, the 400mm f/5.6L IS ($1,400). The variety of uses for this lens is less than using the 70-200 with a 2x converter -- but much easier to work with. I have the 70-200 f/2.8L & 2x converter -- the quality is lacking & it's pretty cumbersome to use.

One final note. Before you drop some serious cash on one of the expensive lenses, go out & rent it for a day. Macros can range from about $10-$25/day, & Super telephoto rentals can range from about $75-$150/day, but some stores will apply it towards a purchase if you decide to do so. I did exactly this when I first began photography years ago. It took one day for me to realize just how difficult it was to use a super telephoto lens (& it was only a 300mm f/2.8L).

Digital Photography: Macro Lenses

Good photography, whether it's using digital or conventional film, relies on a number of basic things - a camera body, a lens and you! All three of these things can be top quality or just plain average. Which would you prefer?

One of the things I've preached to my photography students over the years, especially the techno-files, is that yes the camera body is important, and never more so than in this day and age of CCD chips and many mega-megapixels, but even more important than the body is the lens or lenses you put on it.

I cannot emphasize enough how crucial good lenses, and unfortunately expensive lenses, are but there is no substitute for good glass and good construction.

And when it comes to Macro/Micro Photography add another 20% to the crucial factor. Do yourself a favor if close-up photography is your thing, buy yourself a brand name, 1:1 Macro lens. Both Canon and Nikon include 1:1 Macros in their stables, they're not cheap, but they're absolutely worth it.

The latest Nikon 105 f2.8 Micro AFS lens is a great example of this quality. It has an incredibly shallow depth of field* when working close up which adds an edge to the creative effect. It can transform the mundane, average reality shot into an emotive art piece in an instant - experience this once, and you'll keep coming back for more, and where needed it produces perfectly sharp, precise images as well.

Macro lenses are expensive but the quality of the lenses speak for themselves and long term the investment is worth it, especially when you consider the huge gain in creativity and enjoyment of using such a precise tool.

Remember one thing though when working really close-up, the shift in focus from in-focus to out-of-focus is so rapid at wide open apertures that it's sometimes hard to be sure the point of focus or the subject you are focusing on is enough to hold the picture together creatively. If in doubt, shift your focal point to several positions on your subject and shoot 3, 4 or even a dozen shots.

One of the fantastic things about this digital revolution is that shooting many frames at a time on one subject has no inherent cost. Experiment! Try different apertures, bracket (taking more than one shot at a time at different exposures in order to get the best exposure), try with flash, try without flash ...

The list of possibilities is endless. It's worth shooting extravagantly in the beginning to find a look and feel that you like. Remember in focus or out focus, with movement and without, they all have merit. If you like crisp clean images, then I advise always using a tripod - the amount of camera shake you get is generally exaggerated the closer you get to the image. Furthermore, because focusing is so critical close up, a tripod is a really useful tool, it also slows you down a bit, allows time for reflection, a bit of time for pondering, weighing up options. Of course this doesn't mean that your subject is necessarily going to stay still, but then you can't have everything.

If you are like me, and you enjoy taking a lot of flower pictures you'll know all about trying to keep flowers steady on a windy day! I've taken pictures in the past where the flower has almost completely left the frame by the time I took the picture. Frustrating and yet even then I've found that sometimes the effect of a flower moving out of frame is gorgeous... a bit blurry, a bit odd but cool nonetheless. Serendipity at its best.

*For those of you who are new to serious macro photography with a DSLR remember that the aperture of the lens is always set to its widest open position to make focusing easier and only shuts down to the aperture you selected when the shot is taken - hence the sometimes annoying difference you see between the final image and the image you see while focusing.
