How can I get around to format my digital camera card without removing the 400 pictures?

I have a digital camera. It came with a special USB cable to transfer camera images on a computer, but I lost the cable and can not find anywhere even in the stores I can buy a new one! So now I have a card reader and asks me to format my card, but then said to be erased from the map. I have about 400 photos on the card that are irreplaceable. WHAT SHOULD I DO !?!?!? What will be a fast format consistent format? there is a way that does not remove everything? My camera is an Olympus FE-190. It's a Tiny little thing Tiny USB cable. I can not find any that store and olypmus site that outofstock cable for a few months now. Grrr.
