Canon EOS 40D is it SLR and LCD screen question?

I just bought the Canon EOS 40D and i cant seam to figure out how to shooot while the picture is on the LCD screen instead of having to look through the eye piece. Is that option available for this camera?

Also, is this an SLR camera? It says nothing about SLR on the packaging or anything.
