Shopping For a Digital Camera

If you're looking for a camera, there are literally hundreds and hundreds of choices.  So how do you decide on which camera to purchase?  First, lets define some of the terms used when you're looking at cameras.

Point & Shoot: Point and shoot cameras are beginner level cameras.   This type of camera eliminates the need for you to make any decisions on the camera settings.  The camera decides on whether flash is needed and shutter speed.  Depending on the camera, you may have options for a few things like whether you're taking a night picture, outdoor picture, fireworks, etc.  You should also have a button to set the zoom level.  If you're an amateur photographer, there are lots of great options in point and shoot cameras.

SLR or DSLR: SLR stands for "Single-lens reflex".  These are aimed at the serious or professional photographers.   These types have interchangable lenses, lots of manual controls, external flash units and a viewfinder that shows the image through the lens.  A DSLR camera is much like a professional 35mm camera.

Optical Zoom: Optical zoom is when an image is magnified by the physical lens.  In a point and shoot camera, the lens will move out from the camera to zoom in on the subject.  Optical zoom doesn't effect image quality like digital zoom.

Digital Zoom: When a camera uses digital zoom, it's using software inside the camera to zoom in on the subject.  Much like if you were to zoom in on an image on your desktop computer, cameras work the same way.  When looking at zoom on a  camera, optical zoom is always preferred.

Image Stabilization: When you're taking a picture and the camera's shaking, image stabilization will kick in to help reduce the blur in the picture.

LCD: Liquid Crystal Display.  The LCD is the digital display on the back of almost every point and shoot camera.  These are used as the viewfinder and to review photos.   Look at the number of pixels in the camera specifications to determine the quality of the LCD display.  The higher the number of pixels, the better the display.

Pixel: A pixel is a single dot and the smallest element in a picture.   When millions of these pixels are put together, it forms the picture.   A pixel is so small, it couldn't be seen with the human eye.

Megapixels:  A megapixel(mp) is very simply, one million pixels.  Digital cameras usually define the image quality of the pictures.  A 5 mp camera is made of 5 million pixels.  A camera with a higher number of megapixels will take higher quality pictures.

SD Memory Card: A secure digital (SD) memory card is the memory card that goes in the camera to store your pictures.  SD defines the technology that's used to physically store the image on the memory card.  There are different types of SD cards that fit in different types of cameras like a micro SD or mini SD card.  Your camera typically comes with a small capacity memory card.  You will want to get a new one when you purchase your camera if you want to store a lot of pictures on it.  Make sure to check the specs on the camera before you purchase an extra one.

xD Memory Card: Like an SD memory card, xD (extreme digital) cards are used to store your cameras pictures.   xD cards are only used in Olympus or Fuji cameras.  There are also several variations on the xD card.  Check your camera specs before purchasing an extra card.

Geotagging: With the profiliation of GPS devices, cameras are now coming with GPS's built-in to them.  A camera with geotagging capabilities can tag your photograph with the location and altitude where it was taken.

So given all the information above, the most important point to remember when you're shopping for a new digital camera is to find one that fits your lifestyle.  If you like to carry a camera around with you to take impromptu pictures of your family, a DSLR camera is not going to work for you.  However, if you like to make all the adjustments yourself and you aspire to be a professional photographer, you don't want a point and shoot camera.  Most importantly, find one you will actually use.  If it's too complicated and you end up not wanting to mess with it, it's going to sit at home and it's never going to get used.

Digital Photography Secrets Revealed - Digital Camera Battery Issues

One simple way to separate one photographer from another is through their amount of experience. I would like to share some of my photography experience with you in this article. This is just my suggestion to you because I have learnt this by experience and of course through the hard way. But in my opinion, that's how people actually learn. Sometimes people refuse to listen to an advice unless that something actually happened to him or her. But you can learn it the easy way or the hard. I just hope that IF you do learnt it the hard way, it won't be a once a lifetime situation..

I hang out with my friends one day and brought my camera along just to take photos with them. Everything was going well until something happened! Take a guess. I ran out of battery! This is a very silly example of me, especially if the casio camera battery is a lithium ion (If they are normal alkaline batteries then you can just go to a convenient store to buy some). So I spent the rest of the day being unable to shoot any photos. What a disappointment! (It was actually quite clumsy of me because the battery hasn't been charged for about 1 month but the indicator says it's full. Oh well, who am I to blame?).

The point I'm trying to make here is that one has to always plan ahead on what can happen whenever one takes his or her camera outside. You will never know what can happen; therefore for first timers, I suggest you list down a possible list of mishap that may affect your photography session that day. It may be countless things, your battery might get depleted (just like what happen to me!), your memory card might be full, you might need your flashlight for indoor purposes when the lighting is undesirable, and many more..jvc camera batteries

In a nutshell, you should take note of what can happen with your camera. Do not doubt! Especially, if you are working for someone else, or when you have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Therefore an early plan is always good before a photography session. I've bought two extra batteries now, because Pentax cameras have poor fujifilm digital camera battery performance..

In the era of the do-everything handheld gadget, Flip Video Mino and the Flip Video camcorder family seems almost obsolescent. They don't make phone calls, send instant messages, browse the Web, or even keep your calendar. So why buy flip video? What Flip Video Camcorder does is give you a way to shoot and upload videos—and even edit them a bit—with a easy as abc that only a single-minded product can achieve.

The Flip is a little camcorder about the size of a typical point-and-shoot still camera. It uses flash memory instead of tape, and it costs about 9.99/£ 95.54 (Flip Ultra) for a 4GB version that holds 120 minutes of video or 9/£145.87 for a (Flip Mino HD120) Captures 120 minutes of stunning HD video on 8 GB version. Its user interface could hardly be simpler. There's a four-way control—up and down for the barely useful 2:1 digital zoom, left and right to navigate through the videos you have recorded—with a record button in the middle. There are just three other buttons: play, delete, and power.

The Flip doesn't deliver the versatility you would expect from a ,000 digital video camera. The lack of a real zoom lens limits your shots; the camera doesn't work that well in low-light conditions; and the somewhat dim 1.5-in. LCD display that is the only viewfinder can be difficult to see outdoors on a sunny day. On the other hand, the 640-by-480-pixel images are surprisingly good for such a low-priced camera, and far better than the video taken by mobile-phone handsets. The built-in mike is more than adequate.

The Flip Video works on Apple's OSX just as easily. Like the PC, once plugged in, it is detected as an external hard drive. While you have to install the proper software to view the video files on the Mac as well as the management and editing software on OSX, the installation software is already on the Flip Video and it walks you through setting them up quickly and easily. It's two extra minor steps, but the installed software is identical to the easy to use PC software.

The Whole of the Flip Video family powers up in about 5-10 seconds and, once on, starts recording the instant you press the record button. Pressing it again stops the recording just as quickly and the Flip is ready to record the next clip within two seconds. I was really impressed by the quick ready times.
