You can secure a nice usable vintage Leica for $ 500 or less. However, you must understand a few things to consider before you choose one. Leitz has two different Systems, 35mm Rangefinder cameras.
The former system is a mountain, the lenses that screw into the camera (which we as a 39mm screw thread, or LTM for Leica thread) accepted. They introduced this system in 1930 with the Leica I (C) model and put it well into the 1950s up to the classic Leica IIIg. At the same time during the 1950s Years Leitz introduced a new system that accepts lenses with a special mount (as opposed to screw the lens against the mountain with a red dot and a quick quarter turn it locks), signed in a row.
This is called the M-mount system, with the excellent Leica M3 begun and lasts through to the latest M8. Okay, for $ 500, you want a classic Leica that your fiance, who knows well and appreciates the Leica mystique can, may, in his spare time to enjoy.
I speak Amateur camera, camera for his work, because a photojournalist today would be doing his work with the latest digital devices. No problem. You are on the right track view the Leica IIIf. It is a common model sold more than 180,000 from 1950 to 1957, they adopted the installation of all the millions of Leitz lenses screw up to this point (and even 39mm screw mount Canon, Nikon, and even many) of lentils produced in Russia, and there are always some available on eBay.
I do not recommend, the Leica IIIg, although it is to keep a better camera, there collectors price hovering in the $ 1000 range. I do not recommend some other common products, such as the Leica III, IIIa or IIIc, although they are equally common and easily accessible for less money, they are also just old enough to carry a lot of anger and frustration. Among the Screw mount models, Leica IIIf is a good choice. A finding that work! Do not take the risk on an example that any kind of needs to be serviced.
Looking for a that has a bit outside personality (as long as there is no obvious damage, rub a few marks or gentle however) are not a problem the seller guarantees everything works as it should. And the Leitz summit is a good fast lens, but received the Elmer 5cm f3.5 instead if you can.
Forget the original package (collectors, the price of original PUSH boxes, but there is no advantage for you), not to worry about a case (they disintegrate, and sometimes more damage to the camera, because they too hold in moisture), but try to get a real Leitz lens. This is the best choice for a usable vintage Leica in the $ 400 - $ 500 range.
Now, if you just want to bend a bit, and you want to explore these later M-series cameras, You can probably 1960-ish Leica M2 with a wonderful submicron 50mm F2 lens somewhere in the $ 500 - $ 600 range. All the same ideas apply in relation to the condition etc. The greatest advantage of the M-series about the old screw mount series is that if your fiance 'finally, we want a modern Leica (for work and play) lenses with the M2, he already had with the camera later exchanged.
The classic M3 is also desirable to collectors, the M1 has limited functions, and you should consider amplification for the M4 (actually should specifically the M4-2, because the original M4 has become quite collectible as well), but the Model is the first of the "modern" designs. So it gives you the Leica IIIf, Leica M2, or who are your best choice in this price class. As to your question about Leica values in general, yes, all of them increase in value.
The vast majority increased slightly ahead of inflation (in the course of time, not immediately), not so terrible high, but certainly enough money (the same in the bank and provided) they deal only in top condition. The historically significant models and some selected rarities increase, by much greater degree, in some cases, meaning that it ridiculous. Common models such as the IIIf just seem to float along with the economy. So, in general, Leica cameras seem to be good to very good "investment".
