where can i find a polaroid instant camera?

flea markets? thrift stores? i don't want to spend a lot of money on amazon or ebay. are there any stores that might still sell them?

Everytime I visit a thrift shop, I find half a dozen or more Polaroid instant cameras there for extremely low prices. Frankly, if you ask around, you'll find people who have some who might even give them to you. I've personally got 3 or 4 in my cabinet and haven't used them in years.

The Canon AE-1 is a pretty good camera. However, if future lens capability isn't an issue then I suggest looking for a Minolta XE-7. The XE-7 has Aperture Priority as well as metered manual. It also has a switch to allow easy double or multiple exposures. With its Leitz-Copal shutter its the quietest 35mm SLR of its day. The XE-7 was used by Leica for their R-3 35mm SLR camera.

At 27 ounces w/o a lens the XE-7 is no lightweight. It has a very substantial feel.

NOTE: The self-timer of the XE-7 was a problem. If you find one with a working self-timer count your blessings. I have one with a working self-timer and one with a broken self-timer. If you should decide to buy an XE-7 and it doesn't have an Owner's Manual I have an extra photocopy of the Manual. It would probably be worthwhile to send the camera to Garry's Camera Repair for a full CLA - Clean/Lubricate/Adjust. NOTE: With an adapter you can use the older Canon FD mount lenses an a Canon DSLR. There is also an adapter to use the Minolta SR mount lenses on a Sony DSLR and on a Canon DSLR. There is a bit of confusion as to the designation of the older Minolta manual focus lens mount. The original SR bayonet mount was introduced in 1958. In 1966 Minolta introduced the meter-coupled lens line which was designated MC - as in MC ROKKOR-X. When the X-700 with its Program Mode (as well as Aperture Priority) was introduced the MD (for Meter Dedicated) lens line appeared. In Program Mode you'd set the lens to its minimum aperture (f16, f22) which was highlighted in green on the lens barrel and then lock it in place. Supposedly the older MC lenses won't work in Program but since I've never used it on either X-700 I own I wouldn't know. I use both MC and MD lenses on all my Minoltas and they function just fine.

Comparing Chrome With Internet Explorer 8

Google has marched into the browser space with its 'Chrome'! I was pleasantly surprised to find that almost immediately after the launch, a download link for the Google Chrome appeared on the Google Search web page which is my default opening page in my 'Internet Explorer version 8' (IE8) browser.

Hesitatingly, not knowing how it will affect my desktop computer, I downloaded and installed it on my Windows Vista OS. It appeared as a round colorful red, green and yellow icon on my desktop. The icon looked like the eye of a camera with segmented shutter for adjusting the aperture which appeared as a blue dot in the center. The icon was an attractive showy feature which looked completely different than the blue 'e' of the Internet Explorer. It looked like an eye to view the world through internet, which is what it is supposed to be. Kudos for Google for scoring the first hit.

I clicked on the Chrome icon. It opened. Automatically it imported my favorite sites into it. I saw some of the links on the toolbar below the address window. There was a folder named 'Other Bookmarks' at the end of the tool bar. I clicked on it and a drop-down menu opened showing the rest of the favorites. On closer examination, I found that only the sites from my 'Links' folder appeared on the toolbar, not the sites which were outside the 'Links' folder in my favorites menu. It took me a few minutes to organize the frequented sites on the toolbar and drag the other sites into the 'Other Bookmarks' folder. But this had also happened to me when I upgraded my IE7 to IE8. The showing of the important bookmarks on the horizontal toolbar was a different feature than the vertical side bar of the IE7. But the IE7 too has the upgraded this feature on its IE8 and it now is identical to Chrome.

I expected the Chrome to have the Google toolbar built into it, but it was missing. The Google toolbar has Iconic links to Google Earth, Gmail, and News, and has small search box. I have got used to its presence on the top. I decided to download and install it. The Chrome browser as well as the Google toolbar are both the products of Google and I could have never imagined that there was no Google toolbar available for the Chrome! But this was so. When I clicked on the download button, it opened a site showing requirement of Firefox2 and there was no option for Chrome. I am sure sooner or later Google will make this possible. But as of now, the IE8 scores higher than Chrome with its Google toolbar!

The IE7 had come bundled with my Vista and for a long time I linked it with Vista. I like the feature of opening new tags with the IE7 which was missing with IE6. I still have my older computer with Windows XP which had IE6. I am sure that many users may still not be knowing that they can install the IE7 and now the IE8 on Windows XP and have the benefit of the tags feature without needing Vista for their computer! Coming back to Chrome, the tag feature is right on top of the address bar and not below it as in IE8. I think The Chrome positioning saves a few mm of space which is utilized in making the tools bars marginally wider than the IE7.

The IE8 has a stop-loading button showing as red cross icon at the end of the address bar. I could not find it on Chrome. But it did appear as a black cross just for a fraction of a second while loading the page which disappeared as soon as the page was loaded. The stop-icon ever present in IE8 is redundant after the page has been loaded. Chrome scores! But it loses out on the dropdown pane for recently visited sites, which opens with a click on the small down arrow in IE8. There is no such drop down menu in Chrome, but if you open a new tag in Chrome, thumbnails of recently visited sites appear on the screen. This feature has its own merit but I like the dropdown menu on the address bar of the IE8.

My gmail account opened faultlessly in Chrome and I viewed my inbox. My daughter had sent me a photo as attached jpeg file. I clicked on the download link and to my surprise the usual window for 'open', 'save' or 'cancel' did not appear. Nothing seemed to have happened. But something was moving on the lower left hand corner of the screen. The browser was downloading the file. It was incredibly fast and the 2MB file was done in few seconds! I clicked on the pane as it finished downloading and the image opened in a new window. There was no option to save it! It took me a while to find out that Chrome had opened a new folder 'Downloads' in my Documents folder and saved the downloads in it! For quick reference to all the downloads, there is link in the dropdown menu under the spanner icon in the address bar. Chrome automatically saves its downloads whereas IE8 offers options to 'Open' or 'Cancel' without having to save the download file. I discovered later that Chrome offers a change in the destination of the download folder through Options under the settings (spanner) menu.

The 'page' and 'tools' links in IE are replaced by iconic images of page and spanner respectively in Chrome. However, the contents are not the same! There are many common features most of them the same as earlier versions of IE. It's no point on dwelling on them. The new feature in both the browsers is the capability of stealth browsing without leaving a trace. In Chrome, this is called 'Incognito Window' found under the page menu of Chrome, and 'InPrivate Browsing' under the 'Safety' menu of the IE8. This feature is an absolute must for Chrome because its History is far more exhaustive displaying search terms, time and date of browsing each site. It also displays the search tags and terms of the web-page that has been visited! The Incognito feature can save the Chrome user from some very embarrassing moments. The IE8 has no detailed History, just the day and sites; I have to concede that IE8 lags behind Chrome on this count.

I didn't find the facility of using Chrome Off-line like in IE8. The facility in IE8 of sending the page or link by email is absent on Chrome. The windows related links and facilities like blog with windows live, email with windows mail, translate with windows live, edit with MSO Front Page, and Windows Update link are missing on Chrome.

IE8 offers the facility of using the keyboard to select parts of text or images for copying instead of using the mouse. This is by enabling 'Carot Browsing' under the tools menu of the IE8. This feature is not on Chrome. The IE8 offers a "Suggested Sites' feature. Here the IE8 has stolen a march over Chrome in spite of the fact that Google has unmatched capability to search and pull out sites related to the current website.

The Chrome browser does not have a page zoom feature in the bottom right hand corner like the IE8. This expands the whole page and not only the text. But the key based text zoom with Ctrl ++ / Ctrl +- feature in Chrome is quite as effective as the menu based mouse-click feature of 'text size' option in IE8.

In conclusion, both the new browsers IE8 and Chrome are fully capable to browse effectively. Is Chrome is faster? The IE8 is a very fast browser. There is hardly even a second wait for it to load. But Chrome appears to be faster! Chrome has a latent charm and magnetic quality which has attracted me often to click on Chrome icon in preference to IE8 icon on my desktop. I think it's the hypnotic magic of Google. But on the number of features, I find that the IE8 definitely scores on Chrome.
I searched the Dictionary of Computing for the word 'Chrome' and this is what I found:

chrome:n. [from automotive slang via wargaming] Showy features added to attract users but contributing little or nothing to the power of a system. "The 3D icons in Motif are just chrome, but they certainly are _pretty_ chrome!" Distinguished from bells and whistles by the fact that the latter are usually added to gratify developers' own desires for featurefulness. Often used as a term of contempt.

Does it describe the Chrome browser? It's upto you to decide!

How to check if my polaroid land camera works?

I just got a polaroid land camera one step from Value Village for 5 bucks. So I was wondering if there's any way to check if it works without using the films cause i didnt get that yet. Like some light might be on... or something?

Which model number is it? If it's any of the 200 series (210, 230), you can open up the back, fold out the lens, ready the camera and push the shutter. If it opens, chances are it's in good working condition.

If it's more along the lines of a Polaroid SX-70 or later, you won't be able to tell until the film's in it.

Advertising's Most Important Word

If you had to guess the single most important word in advertising what would it be: free, special, discount, sale, new, improved, bigger, better?

So many words have lost their meaning or been corrupted by misuse or abuse that it is not an obvious choice. The words luxury, exclusive, and world class have been rendered meaningless after being applied to everything from eight hundred square foot condos to restaurants that serve microwave frozen dinners. We can't even rely on light, diet, or low carb to actually describe what's inside a package.

What advertisers have done is create a hyper cynical marketplace, where the audience for whatever you sell has lost faith in what is being said. The Web with its emphasis on content gives advertisers an opportunity to redeem themselves and to deliver meaningful information to its audience.

All Content Is Advertising, All Advertising Isn't

Some may cringe at the thought but in the final analysis all content is a form of advertising. Content is rarely if ever neutral, even if it doesn't overtly promote a product or service; content always has a point to make, or an idea, concept, or position to advance. If content doesn't provide some perspective, some meaningful knowledge, then does it really qualify as content? The same can be said for advertising, if it doesn't explain, enlighten or engage, it is just noise.

What Is Advertising's Most Important Word?

My vote goes to the simple innocuous word "like:" a nondescript word that carries with it all the conceptualization power you need to create a business identity, to form a brand personality, and to position your product or service in the mind of your audience. A previous article of mine "A Website Without Video Is Like…" uses the power of metaphor to illustrate how this little four-letter word can crystallize an idea in the mind of an audience.

Metaphor + Analogy + Stories: The Adman's Best Friends

A metaphor explains complex concepts and hard to comprehend processes by comparing them to common everyday knowledge. We use metaphors everyday without even realizing we're doing it. We 'race' to the office. We work like 'dogs." And we all know, it's a 'jungle' out there. Metaphors are critical to the way we communicate with each other and to the success of our marketing communication and advertising.

Metaphors can be extended into analogies, and analogies into stories, and stories into campaigns; and campaigns developed in this manner have a higher probability of achieving the elusive status of meaningful content that embeds your message in your audience's collective consciousness. There is no better way to overcome a client's objection than to put that objection into perspective with an appropriate allegorical story.

Overcoming Objections: How Long Is Too Long?

We've all heard the constant bellyaching from impatience Web users about how long they have to wait for everything on the Web. Every time I hear this from somebody, I am reminded of the story (perhaps apocryphal) of the early introduction of the Polaroid Land camera.

Before the days of one-hour photo shops, digital photography, and instant video feedback, people had to wait up to a week for their pictures to be developed by the local pharmacy or camera shop. When Polaroid came out with a camera that delivered a finished photograph in sixty seconds, people were amazed; the era of instant gratification had begun.

So the story goes, a group of adventurers traveled deep into the Brazilian Rainforest to learn about the indigenous people. When they came across a tribe who had never seen outsiders before, they befriended them and took pictures of them with the Polaroid cameras they brought along. The natives loved the pictures since they had never seen anything like this before, but they did have one complaint, 'why did it take so long for the pictures to develop?'

The problem is not technology; the problem is one of perception. Like the natives who perceived the sixty second developing of photographs to be slow, so to do many Web-users perceive the Internet to be slow when in fact it is an incredible technological achievement where anyone with a computer and Internet connection can access information from all over the world in seconds or, heaven forbid, minutes.

The Better The Story, The Better The Communication

The solution to the problem is better communication, making yourself and your message instantly understood. People who are truly interested in what you have to say will wait for your Web page or video to load. What gets them frustrated is when they wait, and instead of getting a meaningful message, they get a bunch of nonsense that is irrelevant, self-congratulatory or completely incomprehensible.

A video or audio message on your website is more easily grasped than a page full of densely written text or cryptic bulleted points. But you will loose your audience quickly no matter what the form of your message if it's confusing, muddled, overly complex, or buried in b-school platitudes and industry jargon.

You need your message to be understandable, engaging, and memorable and one of the best ways to convey that message is to compare it to something your audience can relate to. It's like teaching your kids a life lesson by reading them one of Aesop's Fables.

Finding Your Metaphor

Some people have a knack for expressing things in a way that an audience will instantly grasp and more importantly remember. For those of us in the communication, marketing, advertising, and creative development businesses it is a necessary skill learned over the years. But for those in the day-to-day grind of business's nitty-gritty it is rarely an ability that ever gets developed.

Creating a Web video campaign that your audience is going to watch, remember, and pass on to colleagues requires a commitment of time and money, and you want to make sure it communicates your message effectively. Rather than using your traditional approach concentrating of features and facts, try something different; try developing a campaign based on a metaphor that delivers your brand's personality and emotional value-add.

Where to begin? You need to set yourself free from the concrete, and concentrate on the conceptual. If this seems like a difficult thing to wrap your head around, then start with baby steps.

Concentrate On The Conceptual

Any effective marketing campaign whether it's a series of Web videos, direct emails, magazine display ads, banner ads, outdoor billboards, television and radio spots, or any combination there of, will only work if it focuses on a single message.

At the heart of all advertising is the promise you commit to delivering to your clients. No matter how clever or memorable your marketing, if you fail to deliver on that promise, you will fail.

Learn a lesson from the politicians. The general publics' opinion of politicians is about on a par with having a prostate exam. Politicians can't help themselves, the promise the electorate what the electorate wants to hear, and then fail to deliver on promises that can never be kept. Consequently, people become cynical and distrust everything politicians say.

Failure to deliver on your promise to be the cheapest, the best, or the guy with the most features, is like a politician promising no new taxes. Read my lips! Those kinds of promises are a prescription for marketing disaster.

Taking the conceptual approach requires a certain degree of confidence and an understanding that you are going to have to give something up to get something in return. If you present your identity as the Timex of widgets, inexpensive and ubiquitous; then you are giving up the audience looking for the Rolex of widgets, expensive and exclusive.

Audience Resonance: It's All About Striking A Nerve

One of the most memorable commercials ever to appear on television was the 1985 introduction of the Apple Macintosh computer. The anti-big brother message said nothing of bits or bytes, or anything else computer related, but it did establish Apple's character and personality with its allegorical message, a message that is still valid today.

If your marketing message lacks this kind of power and personality; if your advertising is getting lost, or drowned-out by the competition, try finding a metaphor that instantly tells your audience who you are and why they should care.
