I'd liketo buy the PANASONIC LUMIX GF-1 camera kit - preferably white body, perhaps silver, w/20mm f1/7 lens and boxed accessories. Must have English language option for menus. What reputable online retailer has this in stock, will sell this to me, and ship it to Canada? Panasonic has just introduced it with 4 colors in most of the world... yet in Canada they offer it only in Black!

I am interested in the same information (i.e. white body w/20mm f1.7 lens and accessories) possibly also with the white EVF. The retailer has to be outside of North America as the white version is not available here.

I'm more into landscape.. or macro.

the kit lens gives a nice range of wide to mild telephoto. To get more out of your camera, I would suggest getting a true telephoto lens. The 70-200 f4.0 IS is a great lens. If you can't afford that, the non-IS is also great value.

The Origins Of Black And White Photography

Black and white photography is a number of monochrome forms in visual art. Monochrome comes from the Greek monochromos meaning "of one colour", which is a combination of monos, meaning "alone" or "solitary" and chroma meaning "colour".

Quite basic when you break it down!

For Many decades black and white photography dominated the scene until colour was introduced. From the 16th century when the brightness and clarity of camera obscuras was improved by enlarging the hole with a telescope lens until now, we still admire the purity of black and white photography. It was not until the 17thCentury, 1727 to be exact, when Professor J. Schulze mixed chalk, nitric acid, and silver in a flask, that the first photosensitive compound was created. And in 1816 Nicéphore Niépce combines the camera obscura with photosensitive paper and created a permanent image in 1826.

In the past black and white dominated the media. Movies, television and even computers, were all monochrome. It was not until the middle of the 20th century that colour photography became popular.

Choosing a subject is essential for this type of photography, more so than choosing a subject for colour photography. While some subjects can look amazing in colour, they often look dull in black and white. Black and white photography is both the simplest and most sophisticated of all the photography disciplines. It is, honest, fresh, crisp and clean and can result in the most powerful imagery. Capitalising on its popularity, black and white photography holds its own when it comes to photographic exhibitions. Such powerful imagery can be timeless and compelling at the same time. It captures emotions, impressions, and atmosphere that depict nostalgia in a dramatic way.

In black and white photography, you will need to consider the exposure, your background, making sure that the subject is well backlit and that it does not distract from your subject. Lights and shadows are also important. For example, when you strip an image of its colour, you are left with the strictly light and shadows and subtle tones of grey. To experiment with this, you could shoot at different times during the day, that way you will learn the importance of light and shadows and how it can enhance the mood of your image. Colour is also important when considering black and white. Try and choose a subject that has fewer colours. For example; purple and green look great in colour, but in black and white, they become unrecognisable. Therefore, it is important to choose a subject that is of interest and dramatic at the same time.

Nowadays, we are seeing resurgence in black and white photography. The demand for it is rife within the media sector, such as advertising, and print form. Even consumers who want timeless photographs of their weddings and various family occasions are using black and white photography.

Most well known photographers use this medium of photography especially for people photography. From early portrait photography in the 18th century, black and white photography has had a huge impact on the success of modern photography. British photographer Julia Margaret Cameron (June 11, 1815 - January 26, 1879) became well known for her images of celebrities of her time. Even though her career was short lived, 11 years to be precise, she did not show an interest in photography until she was given a camera at the age of 48 years old. She favoured the close crop style of portraiture, a style that is still very popular today.

It is true to say that black and white photography is timeless. It can literally stop time. We only have to take a look at Ansel Adams work of the American West. Even today his images are provoking in every sense as if they could've been taken yesterday.

Of course the use of black and white vs. colour is a personal one, nevertheless, if it was not for the geniuses of the early part of the 16th century, we would not have been to capture time, of which is the essence.

Why can I get hd with antenna and cable coax but have to have hdmi to get it on sat?And on Satallite how can they change an hd signal?

An antenna brings you free Over The Air (OTA) signals from broadcasters. If the broadcaster is transmitting an HD signal, then you can get it in HD if you have an HDTV.

Satellite vendors and cable get the signals of local broadcasters, many times via fiber. The satellite vendor or cable companies must re-encode the signal to put it on their systems. This is a similar process to what the broadcaster has to do to transmit the signal. During this encoding, the satellite vendor or cable company can compress the signal (remove resolution) to create more room for additional channels. This is why OTA signals usually look better. During the re-encoding process, the cable companies can also change the format of the signals. Depending on what they need to do to make the signal work on the analog portion of their systems, they could "letter box" (make the picture smaller creating a black bar on the top and bottom) or "center cut" (whack off the left and right of the HD picture leaving an SD shaped picture).

In the case of satellite, the satellite receiver is actually the tuner for the system. You need the HDMI cable to connect the satellite receiver's output to your DTV, which at that point is pretty much just a monitor. You could also use component digital between the satellite receiver and the DTV.

High Def DVD Technology Faces External Threats

A lot of attention is paid to the fevered competition between Sony's Blu-ray and Toshiba's HD-DVD High Definition DVD formats, but many analysts and the general public ignore the threats that high def DVD technology in general face from other technologies. Unlike the original DVD format that was introduced almost a decade ago and the video cassette technology that came before it, high def DVD's in general face competition from a number of other technologies that are threatening to make them obsolete before they even get a foothold in the market.

The most obvious source of competition comes in the form of all of the services that are offering movies in HDTV format for download over the Internet. For example, Sony's Bravia HDTV sets can display a variety of HDTV videos that can be downloaded from the Internet. While this service has the disadvantage of only working with Bravia HDTV sets, an increasing amount of HDTV content is expected to be made available and it certainly provides a glimpse of how we can expect to get our HDTV content in the future.

Another service that provides HDTV programming is Vudu. Vudu is basically a set top box that can be used to download movies from the Internet and display them in high definition on an HDTV set. The only catch with Vudu is that the device downloads the movies in standard definition format and then upconverts them to HDTV format before displaying them on the screen. This system has the advantage of conserving bandwidth for easier and faster downloads, but doesn't provide the same level of picture quality as a true HDTV download would. Still, the concept of upconverting standard def video to HDTV is sound and may be able to produce better results with the technological advances of the future.

The Sony Play Station 3 is not only a Blu-ray disc player, but is also expected to be capable of downloading high def movies from the Internet in the near future, making another alternative to High Def DVD's. The Xbox 360 from Microsoft is already capable of downloading HDTV movies from the Internet, but the device is plagued by depressingly long download times- sometimes on the order of eight hours for a standard length movie! Still, these two devices make it obvious that both Sony and Microsoft (which is a backer of HD-DVD) are hedging their bets by embracing the same technology that could make their investments in High Def DVD technology a loss.

One interesting option that has been proposed for getting HDTV content in the future is providing it for consumers on compact, portable hard drives. These hard drives would be enormous in capacity and contain entire archives of movies. Instead of paying for all of these movies all at once, consumers would be able to see what's available to watch on the hard drive and then pay to have the movie that they want to watch unlocked. That way having instant access to a huge number of HDTV titles could be extremely cost effective. Of course, the disadvantage of this is that it would be difficult to add new titles to the hard drive, but maybe that's where Internet downloads could come in- to supplement a larger personal archive, rather than to provide the viewer with everything that she or he may want to watch.

I've just bought a Fuji Finepix S8000, it's brilliant for taking pictures of things in the distance as it has 18x optical zoom and was £150 which is about $300? It's got 8 megapixels and is really easy to, I get good pictures indoor and outside, but it is quite bulky.

I was given a camera that has a "70-300mm 1:4-5.6 macro" lens. I am trying to determine what this lens is best used for. What are it's characteristics?

That is a very versatile lens. It can zoom from just a little above the "normal" 50mm length to a really tight telephoto that makes it look like you are much closer to the subject than you really are, And the marco part means you can get close to things and get a lot of detail. THE PROS AND CONS OF USING A FOUR COLOR PROCESS

There are so many articles written about the four color process
but the question on its usefulness still requires further
explanation. There are actually three primary colors of light
that the human eyes perceive and these are red, blue and green.
So why create a four color scheme? Although the three colors can
already come up with various color mixes but the problem with
the combined colors is that it is never great when it comes to
printing on papers. And so technology calls for the creation of
colors that can solve the problem of printing on papers thus the
creation of CMYK which stands for cyan, magenta, yellow and
black.

The combination of any of the four colors would result to the
three colors of red, blue and green. Just how is this achieved?
Well, in order to come up with the yellow color, the colors red
and green are processed. The black color is the outcome of the
combination of the other three processed colors. The importance
of black in printing is that it adds intensity to printed
images.

The crude way of printing images or pictures is to break it into
its four color components by the use of a process camera as well
as four filters. The process camera is a special type of camera
which is designed for copying flat art. It makes used of a high
resolution flat field lens used to take pictures of flat
objects. The process camera also works well for line shots
images that have no gray tones, halftones or color separations.
On the other hand the filter to be use requires fine screen made

or during the proofing stage but looks terrible when printed.
The used of water when mixing inks also results to images that
are not of good quality. There is also the tendency for the
plates to be accidentally moved from the press which would
certainly mess up the colors.

How to fix Canon Powershot SD1100 IS?

Alright so my camera broke a couple days ago, the lens wouldn't retract and it made a buzzing noise. I tried fixing it... and it broke more, this cap thing fell off and I couldn't seem to get it back on. A few hours ago I actually "fixed" it for real, and the lens now retracts like before, the issue is the cap still won't get back. Here's a picture of what it looks like right now.

Since you are not a trained camera repair person, the more you fool around with that camera, the worse it will get. Call Canon at 800-OK-CANON and see if they can fix it for you. It probably won't be cheap.

Wide Angle vs. Telephoto - Which is better?

Most professional photographers have learned about shorter focal length (wide angle lenses) and long focal length (telephoto lenses). There may be debates between different photographers as to which one is best but like everything it is all down to personal choice as to which one you like best.

There are many experts who may say that a wide angle length doesn't necessarily give more depth of field. It is possible for you to try this out for yourself. If you are an accomplished photographer, what impact will it have on your work? Let's not forget that this may be so if you keep the size of the picture constant. It is possible for you to take a picture of a subject using telephoto then zoom out and compare the difference with the wide angle lens.

Maybe you are going to take a shoot of some really amazing scenery, perhaps a mountainous landscape, with amazing colored sunlight. Try using the telephoto setting and zoom in, after which you can then zoom out and take a picture with the wide angle setting. When using the Canon wide angle lens, you will automatically expect there to be more depth of field in the last photo and that’s what it will look like. However, if you enlarge the photo, the depth of field may disappear.

There are many who will zoom out to get more in their picture using a wide angle setting. Often though, by doing this, the objects may look smaller. If you zoom in on a particular subject you want in the picture, you will lose depth of field. By zooming in and out and varying the focal length setting, you have the perception that the depth of field is variable.

It may therefore appear that by using a wide angle lens (such as Canon wide angle lens) will give you more depth of field if compared to using a telephoto. It is true to say that whatever a person is happy with when taking photographs it is all down to personal choice as to what they like and know best and are happy with.

Photo Tips – How To Shoot Amazing Portraits (Part Two)

In Part One of How to Shoot Amazing Portraits, you learned about the value of choosing suitable locations, keeping your portrait subject comfortable and filling the frame with more of your subject's face. In this second part of the article you will learn more about how to be in control of the creative portraiture process while letting your subject feel that he or she has command.

Portrait Tip #4: Speak-Up and Listen-Up!

As a professional photography educator, I've had countless occasions through the years to teach students who were sincerely terrified of social human contact and who did not possess the interpersonal skills that are so crucial to the occupation of full-time photographer. The truth, whether or not they wanted to hear it, is that most full-time professional photographers earn most of their income by photographing people rather than by shooting abstract macro images, Ansel Adam-ish landscapes or surreal photo manipulations. Yes, there is a market for non-human images and a small portion of photographers make a full-time living shooting these very genres for stock photo services or through publications. But consider that most of these photographers likely built-up their skills, repertoire, network and revenue base earlier in their careers by catering to "people" photography.

-This brings us to the inescapable truth that for almost all photographers, portraiture will be the bread and butter, from a revenue and daily activity standpoint, that supports the inanimate artistic forms of photographic expression.

-So, what's the portrait tip associated with this particular revelation? Quite simply, portraiture deals with people and people like to talk. While you need to have the technical skills and stylistic presence of mind, you also need to engage your subject in conversation during the entire portrait shoot! -Do what Dale Carnegie taught us about being successful in business and friendships; ask a lot of questions! Listen intently to your subject's answers. Ask more questions based on their answers and on your sincere interest in what more they have to say. Do all of this continually while you shoot. I guarantee that the resulting portraits will be truthful, natural and revealing. In short – compelling.

Portrait Tip #5: Experiment!

-It's interesting to note how many photographers of "things" are more than willing to experiment with angles, perspectives, lighting, reflections, textures and so-on, but how the same photographers seem stuck in a rut when it comes to portraits.

-Experiment with angles; try getting higher and lower than your subject.

-Experiment with perspectives; position yourself so that your subject's body is facing away from the camera and then engage them with conversation so that he or she swings the head around to face you. Poses with the body and face in different directions are interesting. Try getting half of the face in the frame. Experiment with eyes, mouth or profile exclusively.

-Experiment with the "silly". Through your shared conversation and active listening, you'll get a sense of how far you can or should explore the unconventional. You may find that your subject needs a break from the business of serious photography and welcomes the opportunity to show a different side. There's far more to learn and, best of all, it's all free!
